The Banker’s Story

Chantelle was a successful investment analyst at a leading American bank based in London. It was stressful work, she regularly felt drained and overburdened but it paid well and she had a good lifestyle.

Her bank decided that, due to the new clampdown on bonuses and the 50% higher rate of Income Tax it was going to relocate her department to Singapore. Chantelle did not want to go. Her kids were doing well at school in London, her husband had a good job and her whole life was in the UK.

She tried to find another job in banking. She couldn’t. So, reluctantly, she thought about a career change. But what to do? Her skills were analytical, she had a keen eye for detail. She thought briefly about retraining as a lawyer, but legal jobs are as hard to find as banking roles, so she decided against it.

She thought about setting up her own business, becoming a teacher or working for a charity. They each had some attractions but none of them really did it for her.

So she stopped, to think. What did she really want to do that would make her feel good, even if it wasn’t as well paid or prestigious as banking? That was easy. She was an avid tennis player. Her friends told her what a great tennis partner she made, because she had a way about her which inspired them to play better. If there was anything in the world she would really enjoy it would be coaching others to play tennis. And one day, when she was too old for that she could train  other coaches, or perhaps open a tennis school. Who knows?

For the first time for many years Chantelle felt excited. She was sorry to leave the bank, and her colleagues. She was sorry that would not earn as much as she had done in the past. But it didn’t matter. She had managed to save some money and her life had taken on a whole new complexion now. Chantelle is now an ex-banker. And a highly sought after tennis coach.
